The though t of getting older is never admired, as for most of the people aging means losing independence. For many elders old age seems to be struggling because they have to spend a lot of time in nursing homes. Aging is not always giving up home and staying in nursing homes. Even during old age one can get freedom of independent living by staying with right independent community. But for this one needs to have right independent living skills, so that he can experience comfort and have a healthy, happy and independent retirement. There are certain skills that a seniors needs to posses.  

1.    One needs to capable enough for self-care. For maintaining independent, a person needs to take hygiene and should consider using restroom.  

2.    Dealing with money is an important skill that one needs to posses. One needs money for running the daily life and so it is important to posses this skill. The senior needs to be skilled enough to budget finances and accommodate necessities like water, power and needs.

3.    He should be able to keep a check register and should have understanding of savings and social security income.

4.    Home management is also an essential element. This includes daily errands like laundry, bathing, washing and cooking. Though you can definitely get someone who can help you in these chores but even recognizing the needs is important. Such as hygiene and safety in cooling, turning off the stove when not in use and so on.
